Views of the Delaware Rupublican Party
The Delaware Republican Party believes that government should have less control into the lives of the citizens of Delaware.  They believe that the less they govern, the better the state government structure will be.  The Party wants the residents of Delaware to be able to take control of their lives. 
They should not allow the government to be a crutch for them.  As long as the government continues to do more for the residents of Delaware, the less independent they will become.  The Delaware Republican Party feels that if the government does more, that is their way of gaining control of the people.  However, the state Republicans have realized that philosophy doesn’t work most of the time.
The Delaware Republican Party believes that residents of the state should be entailed to opportunities that are available.  They believe in self-sufficiency, conserving and saving in order to prepare for a rainy day.
The Republican Party was created in the 1850s.  The party was conceived by people who were against slavery and others that believed the government should give land to settlers for free.  The party name “Republican” came from Thomas Jefferson’s Democratic-Republican Party.  Being Republican was synonymous with equal access.
When the slogan “free soil, free labor, free speech, free men”, came out, the Republicans was then considered to be a national party.  At the time, they were really known as a “third party” due to the Democrats and Whigs already being in place as the two-party system.  When the change for the Republicans happened, there was an historic event.  Abraham Lincoln became President of the United States.  What was so special about this was that he was the first Republican to do so. 
During this time, slaves were freed and the concept of slavery became extinct.  This helped those slaves have equal protection just like everyone else.  Also during this time, African Americans were able to get voting rights.
Just like today with the Delaware Republican Party, the national party helped to get voting rights for women.  In fact, a woman from Montana was the first Republican to get elected to Congress.  That was a feat within itself.
Just like the national party, the Delaware Republican Party used the elephant as their political symbol.  This came about when the Democrats tried to spook voters.  They tried to make people believe that President Grant was going to run for a third term in office. With that joke, someone drew a donkey and an elephant.  The donkey was for the Democrats and the elephant was for the Republicans.  Both parties decided to keep their symbols. 
As with the national party, the Delaware Republican Party also calls itself the GOP.  Some people attribute the meaning to that as “grand old party” or “gallant old party”.  The Delaware Republican Party prides itself as the party of independence and self sufficiency.  They get out and campaign along with the faithful volunteers that believe in their philosophy.  In addition to that, they believe in strong morals and ethics for their party.  In the state of Delaware, the Republican Party will always stand for independence and right standing with others.
